James Oscar Lee Sr. was born on July 25, 1939, in Jasper. He leaves a legacy characterized by hard work, perseverance, and commitment. Born as the second oldest of 11 siblings, he was raised on a family farm in the Friendship area of Jasper. He developed strong values during his childhood, centered on hard work and determination. His early years were spent immersed in the responsibilities of rural life, where he became known for his toughness, left-handed abilities, sharp acumen, and love for hunting.

James 's childhood was also shaped by the strong bonds he cultivated. James, along with his brother Otis Jr., and their close friends Andrew Thomas and Alexander Thomas, and cousin Lucious Bristol (Dime), forged a bond that was more than friendship—a true brotherhood. These men became lifelong confidants and protectors of one another, maintaining a deep and unbreakable connection that endured for decades.

A committed student, James excelled academically, particularly in mathematics. His proficiency, determination, and disciplined approach led him to employment as a Mill Carpenter at the Saw Mill in Jasper, where he developed foundational carpentry skills. He shortly thereafter obtained his building contractor's license in Tallahassee, Florida. Applying his carpentry skills, education, training, and entrepreneurial vision, he founded Lee & Lee Construction, a family-run business which contributed to numerous updated housing projects in the community, exemplified genuine entrepreneurship, and provided employment to several people throughout the area.

James 's entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond construction as he founded another family-run business—Lee's Place—a respected entertainment venue recognized across North Florida and South Georgia for its vibrant atmosphere and music. It quickly became a place where people could unwind, connect, and create lasting memories. Particularly in the formative years, he took great pride in hosting family events at Lee's Place, especially the Lee's Family Reunion, which often included members of the Bristol and McCloud family. This dual-purpose facility not only provided several employment opportunities but also brought loved ones together for memorable occasions.

James was baptized at Greater Poplar Springs Missionary Baptist Church, where he served respectfully as a trustee, deacon, and a member of the finance committee. James peacefully entered eternal rest on April 15, 2026.

He was predeceased by his dedicated wife and business partner of 38 years, Jennette Gandy Lee; his parents, Otis Lee Sr. and Rosa-Bell McCloud Lee; his brothers, Otis Lee Jr. and Joe Nathan Lee Sr.(surviving spouse: Linda Lee); and his best friends/cousin-brothers, Andrew Thomas and Lucious Bristol.

He leaves to cherish his memory his eleven loving children: Gloria (Danny) Lewis, Brenda (Carl) Lindsey, James (Angela) Lee, Jr., Jamerson (Carolyn) Lee, Roderick Lee, Vesta Lee, Victoria Lee, Keith Lee, Caprice (TJ) Ford, Shemeka Lee, and Boris Lee; bonus son Carl Mckire; and goddaughter Marva (Greg) Taylor.

He leaves behind his remaining siblings, Maggie Lee, Shirley (Mathis) Webb, Charles Lee, Carl Wayne (Helen) Lee, Linda (Don) Thompson, Francis (Matt) Armstead, Janice Lee, Ray Lee, and friend/brother Alexander (Claretha) Thomas.
