On a cool morning on December 20, 1937, in the Pine Mount community, the late Grover and Nancy Mackey was blessed their second precious little girl and they named her MARVELLA HENRIETIA MACKEY.
Ms. THOMAS
accepted Christ at an early age and began her walk with the Lord between Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church and New Bethlehem AME Church. When she chose her church home, she was a dedicated and faithful member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.
Ms. THOMAS
was also a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Camillus First Baptist Church, and before returning home to McAlpin she was an active and dedicated member or Tucker Missionary Baptist Church in Syracuse, New York.
Ms. THOMAS
was educated in the Historic Pine Mount School System and was a graduate of the Douglass High Class of 1956. She went on to Bethune Cookman College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in May of 1960. She came home and taught for one year before she moved to Syracuse, New York where she received her Master of Science from Syracuse University in May of 1975. Later in the year of 1975,
Ms. THOMAS
received her certification to teach English and French (grades 7-12).
Ms. THOMAS
touched hundreds of students at Corcoran High and impacted them in substantial ways that carry them to even this day.
SISTER THOMAS
was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Syracuse where she was a Past Worthy Matron and moved her affiliation to the Order of The Eastern Star Live Oak Chapter No. 38 OES-PHA since 2021.
Our beloved mother, aunt, confidant, and friend transitioned from labor to reward on August 29, 2022, to try on her long white robe. We will always be grateful for times spent, love shared, laughs given, food cooked, tears shed, and prayers prayed by a woman who will always be a beacon of light in her family, friends, and her community.
Ms. THOMAS
was preceded in death by her PARENTS: Grover and Nancy Mackey; HUSBAND, Robert J. Thomas Sr.; Sister, Juanita Mackey Broxey; BROTHERS: Willie James Mackey and Lucius Mackey; and a NIECE, Leca Neal.
She leaves her love, strong will and determination to those she loved so dear: a son, Benoit Hamilton; a SISTER, Ever Jean Ivey; a cousin (Like a Sister), Blanche Mackey; NEPHEWS: Roderick Ford (Helen), Bernard Mackey (Laura), Plutina Ivey III, Grover Broxey, Derrick Mackey; NIECES: Arverla Neal and Deborah Ford; GREAT NIECES: Anita Jones and Nancy Mackey; GREAT NEPHEWS: Travis Timmons (Katrina) and Christian Mackey; GREAT-GREAT NEPHEWS: Hendrix and Nixon Timmons; SPECIAL NEPHEWS: Robert Brinson and James Jackson IV; DAUGHTER-IN-LOVE, Vivian Scott; LOVING COUSIN, Samill Bucannan; SPECIAL FRIENDS: Reverend Charles Burke and Ms. Leatha Boyd; along with many other s01rnwing family, neighbors, and friend.
