REFLECTION OF LIFE

Eddie Lee Smith Sr. was born on October 20, 1945, in Live Oak, Florida, to the late Frank and Ethel Smith. He was educated in the Suwannee County School System and was a member of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Eddie was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family and taking pride in an honest day's work. In his earlier years, he was a self-employed contractor in the pulpwood and tobacco industries. He later found his calling in the poultry industry, where he worked as a Poultry Catching Contractor for Gold Kist and, later, Pilgrim's for more than 45 years.

For many years, Eddie successfully managed two poultry-catching crews. He was dedicated to his work, took great pride in what he did, and developed relationships with countless people throughout his many years in the industry. Working was simply a part of who Eddie was. Had his health allowed, there is little doubt that he would have continued doing the work he enjoyed for many more years. As his health began to decline, Eddie eventually stepped away from the career that had been such a significant part of his life, retiring in 2020.

On September 12, 2026, Eddie peacefully departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest, surrounded by his loving family. Eddie was a man of determination, strength, and an unmistakably strong will. He lived life on his own terms, stood firm in what he believed, and possessed a work ethic that remained a defining part of him throughout his life. His strength and the unique way he carried himself will forever be remembered and deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr and Ethel Smith; his wife Betty Smith, his brothers, Frank Smith, Jr., Rufus Smith, Alphonso Smith, and John "Take" Smith; and his sister, Farnestine Worthy.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Eddie Smith, Jr:(Yolanda) of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Carmen "Yvette" Mays and Danielle Hampton, both of Live Oak, Florida, one step-daughter, Denise Thomas; one brother, James Smith, husband of the late LeeElla Smith; seven grandchildren, Bryce Smith of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Jeffery Smith of Washington, DC, Julius Mays, Jr., Jalen Hampton, Ladaviana Jones, Makayla Thomas and Jayden Thomas all of Live Oak, Florida; one great-grandson, Jai'Vyon Mays; a host of devoted and loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and his special caregiver Linda "Auntie Lin" Jones who loved him tremendously throughout this journey. Although his earthly journey has ended, the lessons he taught and the life he lived will remain with his family for generations to come.
