Joe Rufus Keel Jr., affectionately known as “Shuteye,” was born on December 10, 1965, in Lake City, Florida, to Joe Rufus Keel Sr. and Mae Edith Keel. He was raised in Jasper, Florida, where he received his education at Hamilton County High School, Class of 1983.
Joe accepted Christ at an early age and was a true believer in our Lord Jesus Christ. He worked various construction jobs for many years before finding his calling at Colonial Bag Company in Lake Park, Georgia, where he worked for more than 22 years.
Everyone who knew Joe knew how much he loved his family. His larger-than-life spirit helped him build countless friendships and create fond memories throughout Hamilton County. He resided in Statenville, Georgia, for more than 20 years before answering the Master’s call on September 26, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Rufus Keel Sr.; his mother, Mae Edith Keel; his sister, Karen Dye; and his brother, Charles E. Keel.
He leaves to cherish his memory a beloved friend, Sonja M. Banks ; his sisters, Vivian (Samuel) Wilson, Stephanie Keel, and Joanne (Wilbert) Powell; and his brother, Joe F. Keel.
His memory will also be cherished by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
