Sophia Gail Johnson, "Sophie," was the first beloved blessing born to the late Otis Henry Johnson Sr. and Lillie Mae "Wheeler" Johnson on July 9, 1962 in Live Oak, Florida. Sophia graduated from University High School in Newark, New Jersey. She went on to higher learning to and attended the nations first degree-granting (HBCU), Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. She then answered the call of duty as a soldier enlisting and retiring from the United States Coast Guard as a Storekeeper Second Class E-5. Sophia served from 1984-1992 as a U.S. Coast Guard Supply Technician stationed in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and later on Governors Island, New York City, NY. She continued to complete her military retirement in 2022 after also working at the VA hospital and U.S. Postal Services. Sophia received the following honors: The U.S. Coast Guard: Bicentennial Unit Commendation Ribbon; Second Coast Guard Good Conduct Award; Rifle Marksman Ribbon; Pistol Marksman Ribbon and the Unit Commendation Award. She continued her educational journey as a proud graduate of Kean College of Elizabeth, NJ with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and a minor in Health Education. Sophia was an extremely intelligent and hardworking woman that wore many hats. She was an excellent licensed Cosmetologist, a patient volunteer mentor for Veterans and community members, Tutor of children at the Suwannee River Regional Library, Live Oak, Fl., and an avit reader and researcher who loved learning any subject. Sophia was unique, focused, kind-hearted, generous, loyal, committed, dedicated, self-less, a supporter, spiritual in her origin, strategic in her purpose and most of all a beautiful person inside and out. Sophia planted many seeds in others' lives and her life is now reaping what she sowed. She was truly anointed and highly favored by God. She proceeds in death her loving aunts and uncles.
Sophia accepted Christ into her life at the early age of 12, at St. John Baptist Church of Newark, NJ. She became a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Live Oak, Fl. after returning home.
Sophia leaves to mourn four loving brothers: Otis B. Johnson II (Vanessa) of NJ; Tyrone Johnson of NJ; Marcus L. Johnson (The late Nancy) of NJ; Timothy L. Johnson of Fl.; and her one and only baby sister; Sheila Johnson Inman of Fl.
She also leaves three precious nieces: Dominique (Richard); Tyvonna and Destiny; two nephews: Otis II and Marcus Jr. (Lance)? Sophie leaves her God sister Catherine Ford- Mobley; her God brother Leslie White and her God Son Tyon Mitchell.
She leaves to cherish fond memories of her aunts and uncles Larry Wheeler (JoAnne) of Fl.; Johnnie Wheeler (Roselyn) of Fl.; James Wheeler of Fl.; and George Johnson (Eleanor); Alberta
Sophia adored a host of relatives, friends and worship partners that she loved dearly.
