Charles Henry Hayes , 76, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 12, 1949, in Havana, Florida, to the late Annie Frances Sellers and Waymon Hayes.
Charles , affectionately known as "Bubba," was a proud graduate of Havana High School, Class of 1966. At just 17 years old, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a skilled Aircraft Mechanic. After seven years of honorable service, he returned home and continued building a life rooted in faith, hard work, and determination. He pursued higher education at Tallahassee Community College and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University while working at Southeastern Telephone Company and later as a Correctional Officer. He went on to complete a career spanning over forty years in transportation, working for Trailways Bus Line and as an Owner-Operator Truck Driver.
Beyond his professional life, Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend. In 1974, he married the love of his life, Cassandra Byrd, and together they built a strong and loving home that became the foundation of their family. Their 52 years of marriage is a testament to enduring love, partnership, and faith.
Charles was a man of great wisdom, strength, knowledge, and was someone many turned to for guidance and advice. His charismatic personality and warm spirit drew people to him, and he had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen and valued. He was quick with a smile, rich in wisdom, and had a great sense of humor that could light up any room. Whether among family or friends, Charles was often the life of the gathering, bringing joy, laughter, and meaningful conversation wherever he went.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 52 years, Cassandra Hayes; his children, Cherie Taylor(Anthony) and Corey Hayes; his cherished grandchildren, Ashleigh Taylor, Aaron Taylor, and Andrew Taylor; Brothers; Reverend Fert Richardson(Paulette), Waymon Hayes, Mack Hayes(Debra), Paul Hayes, Jerry Payne, Willie Sellers(Dorothy), John Sellers(Pamela), Reginald Hayes(Nilsa); Sisters; Laverne Jones, Barbara Leonard(Lionel), Elaine Hayes, Bernice Kohn(Emory), Kathy Hayes, Patsy Mathis, Janet Harden, Barbara Hayes Joseph, Vonceil Sellers, Charlene Hayes and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that love him dearly.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Frances Sellers and Waymon Hayes; his stepmother, Lucinda Hayes; his stepfather, John Sellers; his brother, Bernard Dupayne; his sister, Sherry Payne; and his brother- in- law, Edward Mathis.
Charles will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his love, strength, wisdom, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
